YELL COUNTY, Ark.- On August 21, it was revealed that Sheriff Nick Gault’s wife would be facing felony theft charges after nearly $40,000 went missing from department accounts.

This all left some to believe that Sheriff Gault knew what was taking place, and this is something Clark Smith, a resident of Yell County, believes.

“I know my spouse sometimes hides things from me and I sometimes hide things from her but that kind of money is a lot of money,” Smith said.

Yell County Quorum Court leaders all voted for no confidence in Gault, meaning that they don’t trust him to continue leading, but some were opposed and stood with him, like Beth Anderson.

“He committed no crime, and they need to let him do his job,” Anderson said.

During the meeting, Gault said he let a lot slip through the cracks and could just need better training, however, Tom Berry-Hill begs to differ saying the quorum court did what was best.

“I am pleased with it. It was a difficult vote for them to make and they made it an anonymous vote. Nobody’s voting against it,” Berry-Hill said.

Gault wasn’t at this meeting, but his daughter and others stood in solidarity with him, hoping that the people of Yell County would eventually look past what’s been said.

“I just hope that we can all come together both sides and let Sheriff Gault do his job and continue to combat the drug problem,” Anderson said.
