LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A remembrance ceremony was held in honor of Marcellus Williams by the Little Rock Freedom Fund Sunday at the Arkansas State Capitol.

This event was meant to commemorate Williams in a time where many believed an innocent man was put to death on Tuesday.

A Missouri man has been executed for a 1998 murder. Was he guilty or innocent?

Williams was on death row for the murder of Lisha Gayle, a social worker and former newspaper reporter who was repeatedly stabbed during a burglary at her home in St. Louis.

Both the prosecutor’s office and the victim’s family opposed the execution.

The United States Supreme Court rejected two separate appeals for a stay of execution in Williams’ case.

During the investigation, DNA experts concluded that no DNA from Williams was found on the murder weapon; lawyers argued there was no forensic evidence connecting Williams to the crime.
