FERGUSON, Mo. – A Ferguson police officer was seriously injured during protests on the ten-year anniversary of Michael Brown’s death Friday night.

Officer Travis Brown is still fighting for his life Monday morning after he suffered a brain injury outside the Ferguson police department Friday night.

The incident occurred during what began as a peaceful demonstration marking the ten years since the death of Michael Brown.

Officer Brown joined the Ferguson Police Department back in January. He also served on the frontlines of protests in 2014 as a St. Louis County police officer.

Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle held an emotional news conference over the weekend. He says his officers used patrol cars to block parts of Florissant Road so people attending the peaceful gathering could march safely.

But when his officers witnessed that some protestors had broken and stolen a large portion of the fencing out in front of the Ferguson police department, they went to make an arrest.

The suspect charged officer Brown, who fell backwards, hitting his head on the pavement. Chief Doyle says two other officers suffered minor injuries.

St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell’s office issued charges against 28-year-old Elijah Gantt of East St. Louis, Illinois, who’s being held on a half-million dollar bond.

Gantt faces counts of resisting arrest, first-degree property damage, first-degree assault, and two counts of fourth-degree assault.

Fox 2 caught up with Bell Sunday after he visited Officer Brown and his family. Bell says that Brown has made some improvements.

Bell emphasized that he believes people have a right to peacefully protest, but when others are harmed and property is damaged, people need to be held accountable.

Four others have been arrested too, facing charges including resisting arrest and property damage.
