ST. LOUIS — Clinton-Peabody, the oldest public housing development in St. Louis, is undergoing a major renovation. The project aims to transform the complex into a modern mixed-income and mixed-use community. Located in south St. Louis the redevelopment is expected to bring $150 million in investment.

Construction activity has increased along Chouteau Avenue, marking the beginning of the phased approach. Developers say they’re collaborating with current and former residents.

The plan includes redesigning the street grid to better serve today’s families. It focuses on households earning at or below 60 percent of the area median income.

The public housing project has faced significant challenges, including tenant dissatisfaction and the involvement of state and federal officials. FOX 2 exposed poor living conditions at the complex in 2019 , revealing infestations of mice and insects.

The redevelopment is expected to take five years to complete.
