ST. LOUIS – Tragedy unfolded in downtown St. Louis after a man was struck and killed by a semi-truck while working on his car on Wednesday evening.

The accident took place on westbound Interstate 44 near Broadway, not far at all from the Dome at America’s Center. Crews got the call for a pedestrian struck on the highway just after 7 p.m. Wednesday night.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police say the man was changing a flat tire on his vehicle when he was struck by the truck. The semi pulled over and stopped a couple of miles down the highway.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the car he was changing the tire on was a Chevy HHR, similar to a PT Cruiser.

Accident reconstruction investigators have been called in to take the lead on this case. The incident left a stretch of the interstate in the downtown area completely closed for some time Wednesday night while crews investigated the crash.

Authorities routed drivers off the interstate after the incident so they could clear the highway and process the scene.

At this point, officials have not released the name or age of the person who was killed, just that the victim was a man.

We also don’t have any details on the semi-driver or whether that person could face any charges in this case.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police say they are continuing their investigation Thursday morning.

This is a developing story. FOX 2 will have more information as it becomes available.
