KIRKWOOD, Mo. – Authorities responded to a gas leak Thursday afternoon in Kirkwood, which led to traffic closures along Big Bend Road.

The Kirkwood Police Department responded to a “major gas leak” around 3 p.m. Thursday.

Six Spire trucks arrived at the scene as they worked to clean up and investigate.

“We understand that a third party did hit one of our gas lines. So, we immediately responded to the scene to get working and get repairs on that line,” Spire Public Relations Manager Molly Rose said.

Citizens told FOX 2 off camera that they developed headaches and felt lightheaded while in the area.

Big Bend Road remains closed between South Fillmore Road and South Kirkwood Road. Police say traffic is being diverted at South Fillmore and Milwaukee.

As of 5 p.m., Spire says the scene has been deemed safe and that the leak is isolated. However, the road will remain closed for a few hours. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area until the scene is cleared.

“We’re thankful for the Kirkwood Fire Department for being out here, keeping these lanes closed off so our crew can safely get this work done and repairs done quickly,” Rose said.

FOX 2 has reached out to the City of Kirkwood and Kirkwood Fire Department for a statement but has not heard back yet.
