ST. LOUIS – The Humane Society of Missouri welcomed 36 Chihuahuas into their care after being rescued from a hoarder property in Franklin County Thursday.

According to a release from HSMO, the shelter received an anonymous call regarding the dogs. Upon law enforcement’s arrival at the property, the owner agreed to surrender the dogs to the Humane Society. It is said that the owner was placed in a nursing home recently due to health issues.

All 36 dogs on the property were rescued, but not without some initial struggles. The Chihuahuas were fearful of human interaction and roamed the property freely when HSMO was on the site.

The dogs are all of various ages and health conditions, but are receiving proper care through evaluations and emergency treatments at the HSMO Macklind Headquarters in St. Louis.

“We’re grateful to the concerned citizen who contacted us on behalf of these poor animals, who can’t speak for themselves,” HSMO President Kathy Warnick said. “The conditions at this property were horrible for any living creature to have to endure…we’ll do everything in our power to ensure these animals receive the care they need to fully recover and find loving forever homes.”

The animals will be available for adoption on a case-by-case basis after receiving medical attention and are recovered both behaviorally and physically. HSMO states there is no timeline for when they will be ready, but those looking to adopt can continue to check their website .
