ST. LOUIS — Illinois officials warn that scammers are using advanced technology to steal personal information and money from residents. Even careful consumers are falling victim to these new tricks.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias says fraudsters are creating fake videos and voice messages that look and sound real. Scammers are using AI-generated deep-fakes to impersonate officials or family members, and romance scams initiated through social media. There are also Ponzi schemes involving crypto currencies, and affinity scams targeting specific groups.

The state will hold meetings this fall to teach people how to spot these scams. For now, Giannoulias advises being wary of unexpected requests for money or personal details, no matter how convincing they seem.
