ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis Circuit Court judge sentenced a man on Monday after city prosecutors reached a plea agreement in a 2023 murder case with the man’s attorney.

According to police and prosecutors, J.B. Loggins III shot and killed Jason Palmer shortly before 1 a.m. on May 3, 2023, outside The Gardens at Renaissance Place apartments in the 3100 block of Thomas Street.

Surveillance cameras showed Loggins and Palmer were having an argument when Loggins took out a gun and shot Palmer in the neck. Loggins shot Palmer two more times after Palmer fell to the ground.

Palmer died at the scene. He was 37.

Police said Loggins later gave someone approximately 81 grams of methamphetamine to hold for him. That person later turned the drugs over to the police.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office initially charged Loggins with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and drug trafficking.

Loggins, now 41, was scheduled to face a bench trial this week. He ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

The judge sentenced Loggins to 19 years on the murder charge and three consecutive years for armed criminal action. Loggins also apologized to Palmer’s family in court at Monday’s hearing.
