AFFTON, Mo. — What’s that sound? Well, a lot of people are asking the same question in southern St. Louis County right now. A tornado siren appears to be malfunctioning. Police tell FOX 2 that crews are working to fix the issue.

Monthly outdoor warning siren tests occur on the first Monday of the month in St. Louis County, weather permitting. The test consists of a one-minute tone and voice announcement.

Police say that there is no emergency and that you should not call 911. To report siren issues, contact the ECC Customer Service Line at 314 615-9551 or email ecc@stlouiscountymo.gov .

In January 2012, St. Louis County implemented a new $7.5 million outdoor warning system with 204 sirens. This project was funded by an Emergency Communications Sales Tax and is part of a larger $100 million initiative to unify police, fire, and EMS communications systems.

The new sirens provide immediate status feedback, enabling faster repairs. However, weather alert radios are still recommended for indoor use.
