Old Lafayette Square firehouse converted into luxurious 4-bed, 6-bath home

ST. LOUIS – A piece of 19th-century St. Louis history will soon be up for sale, as the old St. Louis Firehouse 7 has been converted into a 4-bed, 6-bath luxury home.

Built in 1897 on South 18th near Rutger Street, owner and seller Fritz McAvoy, who bought the property in 2022, said he went through a painstaking two-year renovation in order to maintain the building’s historic charm.

Every bedroom in the 7,000-square-foot home is its own primary suite (private bathroom), along with two full kitchens. The refinished basement contains a half bath, wet bar, home theater, and plenty of storage space.

Yes, the fire pole was removed when the city decommissioned the building—the holes have since been covered—but McAvoy said he’s considered adding a pole for aesthetic purposes (i.e. not for sliding). If you’re ever bored of taking the stairs, you can ride an elevator up to the second floor and the rooftop, which has marvelous views of Downtown St. Louis and the Gateway Arch.

The 1,600-square-foot firetruck bay, now equipped with a motorized overhead door, can house several vehicles or be used for office. A garage along the alley can store two cars and the rear parking pad has enough room for four additional vehicles.
