ST. LOUIS – A surge of moisture from Hurricane Helene and an upper-level low pressure center over the mid-Mississippi Valley are coming together as expected and creating a wet Friday for the St. Louis area.

Steady rain will be with us Friday through the daytime hours, with the heaviest falling from mid-morning through late afternoon. After 6 p.m., the heavier rain looks like it will shift back to the east a bit, but lighter showers will be hanging around. It will also be windy on Friday, with gusts around 30 mph through this evening. Southern Illinois may see gusts to 40mph.

Rainfall totals will average close to 1 inch in metro St. Louis, with lower totals to the northwest and much higher totals to the southeast. Some of the southeastern counties could see 2-4 inches of rain before the remnants of Helene finally drift away Sunday.

The rest of the weekend will not be as wet. However, Helene’s remnants won’t be too far away. Expect occasional spotty showers and thundershowers, especially Saturday and Sunday afternoons. High temperatures for the weekend will be in the 70s. Sunshine returns on Monday.
