ST. LOUIS – If you happen to be walking by the Central Fields in Forest Park, you might just see something you’d normally find nearly 4,000 miles away.

Founded in the summer of 2002, the St. Louis Gaelic Athletic Club has introduced its over 150 members to traditional Irish games like Gaelic football, camogie, and hurling.

Often known as the “Fastest game on grass,” hurling involves a wooden bat-like handheld known as a hurley and a ball known as a sliotar. Men primarily play hurling, while women play camogie, a sport similar to hurling with slight rule variations. Gaelic football is played by both men and women.

Today, the St. Louis GAC fields several teams locally to compete against each other across the three sports. The league’s best players will also travel to other states to compete in national competitions, some of which the club has won championships.
