The highway patrol said Gary S. Caldwell was driving a 1973 Triumph TR6 eastbound on Highway 94 when he approached the curve at Dress Island and was traveling too fast. Caldwell allegedly lost control of his car, which went off the highway and overturned.

Caldwell was pronounced dead just before 8:15 p.m. He was 72.
