Okmulgee County Humane Society to open new shelter

    2024-04-16

OKMULGEE-Okla. -What's old will become new again in Okmulgee.  The Okmulgee County Humane Society is planning to transform an old 1920s building in downtown Okmulgee into their new home.

A $750,000 grant from the Sam Viersen Family Foundation will fund the new adoption center project according to the shelter's Facebook page.

The current Okmulgee County Humane Society operates within the City of Okmulgee Animal Shelter as a separate entity, with a “no-kill” status and as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, not city or state funded-supporting the shelter with fosters and boarding.

The new 4,000-square-foot structure will become the Humane Society's new, separate adoption center.

“We are entirely grateful to the Sam Viersen Family Foundation for the opportunity to build an adoption center to facilitate our work, help more animals in need, serve the community and become an integral part of the continued revitalization of Historic Downtown Okmulgee. This is a dream and a gift beyond our imagination,” says Aimee Robinson, president of Okmulgee County Humane Society. “Our adoption center will aid us in saving even more lives from city shelter and animals ‘dumped’ in the county. This truly is a year of revitalization for our organization and an incredible gift to our community at large.”

Architectural plans are currently in progress, and construction is anticipated to begin by the end of the year. Renderings will be shared once the design is in its final stages with a 2025 opening date anticipated.

collngratulations! good work! wish I could foster like we did before but we have been doing our own shelter. so far, 5 puppies, 1 dog, 6 cats have homes. our neighbors are doing TNR and just got another kitten that was found on the road. if we all help, we can save lives

I'm so glad to hear this great news! Thank God for the SamViersen family. This is needed so badly. I wish I could foster, but I live in Senior housing and they have strict RULES ☹️ So what I at least can do is give some money every month. It's not much, but like I've said before, if everyone could give just $10.00 a month it would add up. Thank you so much for taking care of all these babies that desperately need good homes. There are so many 😢
