Sand Springs students start new school year after Summer renovations

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. — Teachers in Sand Springs stood outside waving students in for the first day of school.

“It’s a really exciting day for all of us the kids, teachers, myself and staff. We’re just really looking forward to getting the kids back in the room and seeing the changes,” said Jay Rotert, elementary school principal.

Rotert explained they repainted and created a new office area over the summer.

“The kids get to see a school with a traditional look on the outside and a brand new look on the inside,” said Rotert.

The elementary school is just one building with a few changes.

Superintendent Sherry Durkee says Sand Springs is making their administration building ADA accessible. They plan to renovate the press box at the high school stadium and they will build a new 7th and 8th grade center at Clyde Boyd Middle School.

“Here at Sand Springs a lot of our facilities are fairly aged and we’ve seen difficulties with sewage plumbing, roof tethers and all kinds of things that need to be corrected” said Durkee.

Despute all the projects going on, Durkee says they're ready to be back. She shared some advice for the students.

"Just come ready to learn. Every day is a new day. Mistakes are made and things are challenging but everyday is a new day,' said Durkee.
