2024 open enrollment for EMSAcare ends this week

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa utility customers can sign up for EMSAcare to help cover the cost of emergency ambulance transports. The open enrollment period ends this week.

Every August, customers can opt into EMSAcare or subscribers can opt out of the program.

EMSAcare is a subscription that helps cover the cost of any EMSA transportation during the following year. Members pay $5.45 per month through their City of Tulsa water bill.

The open enrollment period this year ends Saturday, Aug. 31.

According to EMSA, the program covers out-of-pocket expenses for emergency ambulance transports to an emergency room anywhere in the EMSA service area.

Since 2018, the subscription has saved members more than $55 million in emergency ambulance transports.

To enroll into EMSAcare or to opt out of the program, click here . The link is available until Saturday, Aug. 31.

Customers in city limits can call the City's Customer Care Center at 311, and customers outside city limits can call 918-596-2100 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Friday, Aug, 30.

If a resident takes no action, their enrollment status won't change, EMSA said.

EMSA said around 70 percent of Tulsans participate in the EMSAcare program.

"Even with good insurance coverage, a typical emergency ambulance ride can cost a patient about $800," EMSA said. "Emergency transportation can cost more than $1,300 without insurance. EMSAcare covers everything a patient owes, including all out-of-pocket expenses or co-payments, for emergency transport. Additionally, EMSAcare members are charged a significantly reduced rate (40 percent savings off the standard rate) for uncovered non-emergency service."

EMSAcare applies to all permanent members of the household, regardless of age or relationship to each other. Members don't need to have medical insurance.

    Additional information from EMSA:

    • Residents living in multi-family housing units, such as apartments, who do not have a Tulsa utility account can check with their landlord to determine if they are enrolled in the program. • People who live in retirement, assisted living and similar facilities are not eligible for the City program, but can personally enroll in EMSAcare by contacting EMSA directly at (918) 396-2888.
