Good News: Sperry drug store from deleted "The Outsiders" scene attracting tourists

SPERRY, Okla. — A deleted scene from "The Outsiders" was filmed at the old drug store in Sperry and people think it could bring tourists to town.

If you've seen "The Outsiders," you probably remember the scene shot at the DX gas station in Sperry.

Gary Coulston, the owner of the gas station says it brings in tourists from all over the world. Recently, they had people visit from Australia and Argentina.

"You go in the DX station and look at our sign in book, the majority of people who sign in are not from Oklahoma, they're from all over the United States," said Coulston.

Directly across the street from the DX gas station sits the Rexall Drug Store. It's been vacant since 1986, but it is now open for business.

"It's been around a long time, everybody remembers it from my youth," said Coulston.

The drug store also has a unique tie to "The Outsiders" movie. They filmed a deleted scene that's included in some uncut versions of the film at the drug store.

"We have something unique. We're ten miles north of downtown Tulsa, on the weekends here it's just nonstop," said Coulston.

You can recreate the scene and sit in the same spots the characters did while getting a milk shake or soda.

"Our town is finally alive again," said Coulston.

The building is renovated but keeps the vintage soda shop aesthetic.

People that grew up in in Sperry, like Larry Briggs, have fond memories of the drug store.

"Would come here everyday after school. Sometimes walking to church on a Sunday morning we'd come in here to get a cherry coke," said Briggs.

Briggs loves seeing all the new people, movie fans and tourists come through their town and now they have a new place to stop.

"I think it's great. They've done a great job. It's helping bring the town back to life. A lot of excitement, new construction bringing back old memories," said Briggs.

Gary Coulston says they have big plans to keep revitalizing their downtown and bring more people to Sperry.

Coulston is also the president of UpWard Sperry, a nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing Sperry.
