Oklahoma Department of Transportation plans to widen Highway 169 in Owasso

OWASSO, Okla. — The Oklahoma Department of Transportation plans to widen Highway 169 in Owasso to help alleviate congestion and horrible rush hour traffic.

This project was updated in ODOT's $9 billion, 8 year construction plan.

The plan is to "widen 169 from 66th Street, where it currently does go down from three lanes to two lanes in each direction. So we're going to widen that from 66th up to 86th Street," said TJ Gerlach with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

Gerlach said a bridge was completed last year to help prepare for this upcoming phase of the project.

"That bridge was completed ahead of this project so that the bridge itself would be wide enough once we went through and widened the rest of the road."

This project is a highly anticipated one according to Gerlach. While it's currently still in the design phase, construction could begin in the summer of 2025.

This project isn't the end of the planned improvements for Owasso and the surrounding areas.

"Obviously, it won't alleviate everything because we know there are high economic development corridors just north of there," said Gerlach. "But we do have projects also in our 8 year plan further ahead...that will also address those areas. We're looking forward to being able to help the Owasso area and more move efficiently in and out of the community."
