SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — South Bay residents are battling a proposed landfill in a wilderness area in Otay Mesa, near the U.S.-Mexico border.

It would be the second, and larger, landfill in the area. There’s already a smaller landfill a few miles away.

According to the company proposing the landfill, the entire area would be lined with heavy-duty plastic to prevent any toxic waste from seeping into the water table.

But State Sen. Steve Padilla is fast-tracking a bill to kill the project, and it’s making its way through the legislature. On Thursday, the Assembly’s Appropriations Committee will hold a vote on the bill.
