SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Each year on the third Saturday of August, a special day draws public attention to homeless animals worldwide.

International Homeless Animals Day was created in 1992 by the International Society for Animal Rights, aimed at finding homes for cats and dogs abandoned on the streets.

Since then, the day has been observed in more than 85 countries, including all 50 states and the District of Columbia, according to ISAR’s website .

To coincide with International Homeless Animals Day, Helen Woodward Animal Center is hosting an adoption event starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday to match people with abandoned pets.

Jessica Gerke, a spokesperson for the center, told FOX 5/KUSI that many of their adoptable animals are those left abandoned after the Maui wildfires destroyed their homes.
