Californians can now add a digital driver’s license or state ID to their Google Wallet on mobile devices, the governor’s office announced Friday.

“California is now one of five states to offer a digital driver’s license in Google Wallet! Carrying a mobile driver’s license and identification card has never been easier,” Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The official rollout of digital driver’s licenses and state IDs on Google Wallet follows the governor’s announcement last week that the same feature will also be available for iPhone users . However, a potential rollout date for Apple products was not announced.

“Californians will be able to use these new options to present their driver’s license or ID card in Google Wallet or Apple Wallet at select businesses and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) airport security checkpoints and in select apps,” the governor’s office stated in a previous news release.

It’s important to note that digital licenses or ID cards won’t replace the requirement for individuals to carry a physical card. According to the DMV, law enforcement, state government agencies and some businesses have not begun to accept them.
