San Diego’s SURFER Magazine returns with new relaunch

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The revitalized SURFER Magazine is back with a new relaunch.

After not publishing since 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, San Diego’s SURFER Magazine returned with its first print edition on Friday .

Editor-in-chief, Jake Howard, was live on KUSI Friday to talk about the return of the print publication and the magazine’s new owners.

Howard was named editor-in-chief ahead of the brand’s relaunch, having previously served as managing editor for SURFER.

The first issue hit stands Friday, Aug. 23, 2024 after a nearly five year hiatus. The special print edition with the theme — “What Is Surfing Today” — follows Kelly Slater, Carissa Moore , San Diego’s Caitlin Simmers, and more.

The first 50 buyers on SURFER.com had the chance to receive a special gift box with SURFER gifts and merch, according to SURFER.com.

“Grab the mag, go down to the beach, catch a few waves, have some lunch, read the mag under the umbrella. Maybe take a nap and go catch some more waves,” said Howard when talking about the vibe of the magazine.

Howard said you can expect only one issue in 2024, but the magazine plans to ramp up in 2025 based on reaction.

SURFER Magazine has been around since 1960, and is known as the “bible of surfing.”
