Wrong-way driver dies in head-on crash on I-8 in El Cajon

EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A wrong-way driver died in a head-on crash on Interstate 8 in El Cajon early Sunday, California Highway Patrol reports.

Just after midnight on Sunday, a 49-year-old Lakeside woman died while driving the wrong way on I-8 westbound in El Cajon.

According to CHP, the woman was driving a Kia K5 the wrong way at a high speed in the #2 lane of I-8, just west of El Cajon Blvd, while a 34-year-old El Cajon man was driving a Chevrolet Silverado in the same lane.

Police say the Kia and the Silverado crashed head-on, and the driver of the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene. She has not yet been identified.

The driver of the Silverado was moderately injured, according to CHP, and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Authorities say they believe the Lakeside woman may have been under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and they will continue to investigate the wrong-way crash.
