SAN DIEGO — “Chicles,” the famous running dog from Tijuana is being forced to retire from long-distance running after veterinarians discovered the canine is in bad need of surgery to repair a hip and femur.

According to his owner, Hector ‘flecha’ Hernandez, chicles’ injury was detected during a routine checkup earlier this week.

A fracture was noted on a hip and femur that requires complicated surgery.

Hernandez, an accomplished runner himself in Baja California and California, says the dog was likely injured when it jumped from a slow-moving van as it was about to park not too long ago.

Chicles, which means chewing gum, has gotten notoriety for participating in long distance races in Tijuana and in other parts of Mexico.

The dog’s social media accounts have more than 40,000 followers.

Together, while running, Hernandez and chicles have raised funds to help find homes for stray dogs.

So far, their efforts have led to the rescue of 18 dogs.

The nine-year-old chicles himself was rescued by Hernandez four years ago.

The dog is so popular, that a mural was painted to recognize his accomplishments along one of the main roadways leading to the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

Hernandez says the surgery required by chicles is somewhat complicated and can only be done by a specialist, and that’s why he’s looking at options on both sides of the border.

But the injury means chicles’ long-distance running days are over.

“For days, tears have been streaming from his eyes, I don’t know if it’s from the pain, or because he knows that he won’t be able to run anymore like he used to,” said Hernandez.

Hernandez is hoping people will want to help chicles and donate money for the surgery.
