LOS ANGELES ( KTLA ) – Christopher Hubbart, dubbed the “Pillowcase Rapist,” is set to be released from prison once again and will be making his home somewhere in Los Angeles County, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office (LADA) announced Wednesday.

“In March 2023, against the objections of the LADA to his conditional release, Santa Clara County Superior Court ultimately granted the conditional release resulting in Hubbart coming back to Los Angeles,” the DA’s office said in a news release.

The decision also transfers the responsibility of housing Hubbart from Santa Clara County Superior Court to Los Angeles County Superior Court, which will make the final decision regarding his placement.

The DA’s office said that DSH and Liberty Healthcare, a health and human services management company, have been charged with finding “appropriate housing.”

Hubbart was convicted in 1973, 1982 and 1990 in Los Angeles and Santa Clara counties for a series of rapes and other sex crimes targeting dozens of women.

In 2014, Hubbart was released from a mental hospital and placed in a home just east of Palmdale amid opposition and protests from local residents.

Coalinga State Hospital police officers took Hubbart back into custody two years later after he violated the terms of his conditional release, including failing five lie detector tests, the DA’s office stated at the time.

“Repeatedly placing these individuals in the same community shows a blatant disregard for the safety and well-being of our residents,” said District Attorney George Gascón in a statement included with Wednesday’s news release. “Our deputy district attorneys will persist in opposing Mr. Hubbart’s placement in the Antelope Valley. We must demand more from our judicial system, ensuring decisions serve the best interests of our communities while exploring alternative locations for these placements.”

A hearing to determine where Hubbart will be placed is scheduled for October 1 at the Hollywood Courthouse.
