HARFORD, Md. ( WDCW ) – A 15-year-old has died after being shot inside the bathroom of a Maryland high school Friday, authorities said.

The Harford County Sheriff’s Office and several firefighters responded to the Joppatowne High School for a shooting on Friday afternoon.

In a message sent to all Harford County Public Schools, officials said the victim, student Warren Grant, sustained a gunshot wound during an altercation at the school.

Officials found that the 16-year-old suspect and Grant were the only people involved and that the shooting was an isolated incident. While the principal and a school resource officer were in the school at the time, they did not hear the shot itself. They did, however, hear commotion and responded.

The Sheriff’s Office said that the shooting happened in the first-floor men’s bathroom. The suspect left the school after, but was found within a few minutes and apprehended near neighboring houses.

Officials said Friday was his first day reporting to school this year so far.

Grant was airlifted to a trauma center in serious condition. The Sheriff later confirmed that he died.

The school released a statement on its website stating that deputies were called to an “isolated incident” after a fight broke out.

Sheriff Jeff Gahler said that while current legislation prevents the Harford County Sheriff’s Office from questioning the suspect, the State’s Attorney has confirmed the suspect will be charged in the shooting. Maryland law prevents law enforcement from questioning minors under arrest without an attorney present.

Parents were asked to pick up students at the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church.
