Evacuation orders lifted as crews battle vegetation fire in Campo

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — An evacuation order was temporarily issued in Campo Saturday as crews battled a vegetation fire that had the potential to spread up to 1,000 acres, said Cal Fire San Diego.

Shortly after noon Saturday, fire officials announced on social media that the blaze was burning off of Church Road and Golden Acorn Way, south of the Golden Acorn Casino.

In an update at 12:16 p.m., Cal Fire said the blaze, dubbed the Church 2 Fire, was at 20 to 30 acres. That has since grown to 65 acres as of 1:05 p.m.

The fire was temporarily considered to be threatening structures in the area, according to an alert sent by by the County of San Diego.

An evacuation order was issued at 1:05 p.m. for nearby areas, which are shaded in red in the map below:

During an evacuation order, immediate movement out of the affected area is required due to “an imminent threat to life.” The county released the following orders with the alert:

• There is extreme danger in your area.
• You must leave now.
• Do not wait.
• Contact your neighbors and share information.

The county said a temporary evacuation point was established at Golden Acorn Casino, which is located at1800 Golden Acorn Way in Campo.

In another update at 1:35, Cal Fire San Diego said the forward rate of spread has been stopped and firefighters have made “good progress.” Crews will remain on scene throughout the night and into tomorrow to extinguish hot spots.

The evacuation order has been lifted in the area.

On Sunday, fire officials said the fire is at 45 acres and is 25% contained.
