Suspect arrested in fatal shooting of 21-year-old man in Lemon Grove

LEMON GROVE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A 21-year-old man was fatally shot in Lemon Grove Saturday night, and authorities on Sunday identified the victim and announced the suspect was arrested.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were in the 3000 block of Lemon Grove Avenue around 11:30 p.m. Saturday when they heard several gunshots ring out.

While checking the nearby business area, the deputies were told that there was a group of people arguing in the 3100 block of School Lane. While responding to the area, authorities found the 21-year-old victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The man was transported to a local hospital by the Heartland Fire Department, where he was later pronounced dead. He has been identified as Diego Omar Valera-Trujillo, 21, of Spring Valley.  The cause and manner of his death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

San Diego Homicide Investigators say they were able to identify a suspect after investigating all night and day. A Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail arrested Joshua Gonzalez, 27, of Lemon Grove, near his home on Lincoln Avenue around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. He was taken into custody and faces murder charges.

Sheriff’s Homicide investigators say they are still working to determine the circumstances and motivation behind the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
