Man suspected in August deadly shooting arrested

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Authorities arrested a suspect after the shooting and killing of a man last month in the City Heights area.

Jesus Alvarez, 33, of San Diego, was taken into custody and booked at the San Diego Central Jail, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release Monday. Alvarez faces murder charges.

The shooting occurred Aug. 8 at a homeless encampment at the University Avenue off-ramp from the northbound Interstate 805 freeway, resulting in the death of 30-year-old Edgar De La Cruz, according to law enforcement.

“I would like to thank the investigators involved in the successful arrest of Jesus Alvarez. This accomplishment is a testament to the tireless dedication, skill, and teamwork in ensuring the safety and security of our community,” said Border Division Chief, Tommie Cocroft.
