SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — One of the men involved in a fatal drive-by shooting at a La Jolla house party in 2019 has been sentenced to more than two decades behind bars.

Malik Joshua Campbell, now 25, was sentenced Monday to 24 years in state prison after pleading guilty to opening fire at a crowd of people that were gathering for a house party on Cuvier Street on June 23, 2019, which left the unintended target, Nina Silver, dead, and three others injured.

Second suspect charged with murder in La Jolla house party shooting

Campbell was arrested in September 2019 for his role in the shooting death of Silver. According to the District Attorney’s Office, Campbell pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, admitting to the courts it was for the benefit of a criminal street gang. He also pleaded guilty to three counts of assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury.

The other defendant in the case, Odyssey Sellers Carrillo, who prosecutors allege was the shooter, was arrested in July 2019 after a high-speed police pursuit. He is set to be sentenced later this year.

According to police at the time, Campbell and Carrillo are accused of shooting at a crowd of people while driving through an alley in the 7500 block of Cuvier Street in La Jolla.

Four people in total were shot; Silver was killed, the other victims were injured by the gunfire.

2 to stand trial for fatal drive-by shooting into La Jolla house party

At Campbell’s sentencing hearing, the prosecution talked briefly about how the victim’s mother has expressed her hope that the defendants turn their lives around after this case comes to a close and they serve their time.

The judge at the sentencing noted how rare it is to hear that from the victim’s family. “I want you to know how special it is that there are victims in this case that are still hopeful for you. It’s rare. Hold onto that, do something with it.”

    Campbell replied, “thank you, ma’am.”

Campbell will spend the next two decades behind bars, the judge ruled Monday, and was denied probation. However, he does have 2,102 days of credit for time served so far.
