NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Wednesday marks 23 years since the Sept. 11 terror attacks and people across the nation, including here in San Diego County, are paying their respects to those who were lost on that fateful day.

In the South Bay, National City firefighters are gathering for breakfast and a remembrance ceremony at Fire Station 34, fulfilling the promise to “never forget.”

FOX 5/KUSI spoke with retired Battalion Chief Don Miner outside of the fire station Wednesday morning.

“We have some retired FDNY (New York City Fire Department) that will be speaking today and we also have quite a few artifacts and posters and pictures from different parts of 9/11,” said Miner. “So anybody that comes you can actually touch a lot of the pieces.”

The ceremony, which is open to the public, kicks off at 8:30 a.m. at 43 E 16th St. in National City. Admission is free.

Other memorial ceremonies in the county include the following:

    • Chula Vista, Bonita, Imperial Beach Fire Stations and police headquarters
    • County Administration Center at 7:30 a.m.
    • USS Midway “Never Forget” event at 2:30 p.m.
