EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — It’s been one year since multiple license plate reading cameras were installed across the city of El Cajon, and local law enforcement says they’ve been “highly effective in crime reduction.”

On Tuesday, the El Cajon Police Department released year-over statistics on how the cameras have assisted authorities.

Gang members suspected of extorting Barrio Logan businesses into paying for ‘protection’

“The cameras have been an invaluable tool in keeping our community safe and deterring crime,” said Chief of Police Mike Moulton. “This high-tech tool gives our officers real-time information when a suspect drives through our community, and lets would-be criminals know that we have another set of eyes keeping watch over our city.”

Here’s a breakdown how the cameras contributed to crime fighting efforts over the last year, according to the police department:

    • 128 vehicles recovered; worth more than $1.2 million
    • 151 arrests related to stolen vehicles recovered
    • Five illegal guns confiscated
    • License plate reader-related arrests have led to the significant seizures of fentanyl, methamphetamine and other illegal drugs.
    • The cameras have assisted in multiple investigations, including the double homicide of two teenagers.

A total of 40 license plate readers are installed throughout El Cajon, and now Chief Moulton is proposing that the program be expanded. Looking ahead, “vacant” police positions may be used to broaden the program.
