Traffic stopped at World Trade Bridge after storms roll through South Texas

McALLEN, Texas ( Border Report ) — Southbound commercial truck traffic was halted Monday at the busy World Trade Bridge, which suffered damage from storms that rolled through South Texas on Saturday.

The international bridge in Laredo, Texas, is the No. 1 port for commercial truck traffic from Mexico into the United States on the Southwest border.

Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño along with officials from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Agencia Nacional de Aduanas de México (ANAM) and others met at the World Trade Bridge on Monday to discuss contingency plans, city officials said.

“We are committed to working with all parties to address this situation swiftly and efficiently. While traffic delays are inevitable during this recovery period, we are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of our community and the smooth flow of commercial traffic,” Treviño said in a statement.

Police in Laredo currently are managing a congested traffic route, called Loop 20, where trucks are stacking up as they wait for the bridge to reopen to cross back into Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, in the state of Tamaulipas.

Officials also are redirecting trucks to the Colombia Solidarity Bridge, which connects to the adjacent Mexican state of Nuevo Leon.

Monday is a holiday in Mexico — el dieciséis de septiembre, or the Sixteenth of September, marks the beginning of Mexican independence from Spain.
