SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego Rodeo is coming back to Petco Park next year.

The world’s top rodeo athletes will headline the three-day event, which takes place from Jan. 10- 12, 2025, vying for more than $800,000 in prize money, the San Diego Padres said in a news release Tuesday.

Participants will compete in various timed events and disciplines including barrel racing, saddle bronc and bull riding.

The Padres, who play at Petco Park, said the history of rodeo culture dates back hundreds of years to the original indigenous charros and subsequent Charrerías.

“Rodeo’s origins are firmly rooted in Hispanic, Indigenous and Black Hispanic traditions, predating the formation of San Diego itself. The San Diego Rodeo is proud to engage and spotlight participants from various Indigenous Sovereign Nations such as Kumeyaay, Blackfeet, Northern Cree, Métis, Sioux, Chippewa, and Crowe,” the release said.

Next year, the Padres said the rodeo will implement a bigger event space for the larger crowds and daily rodeo after parties with musical performances from country stars including Elle King, Ryan Bingham and others.

The rodeo will also feature a vendor village of traditional Western fashions, crafts and artwork.

Last January, more than 45,000 people showed up to Petco Park through the three nights, bringing in over $1.5 million into the local economy, according to the Padres.

Tickets will be available to the public on Sept. 17.
