SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Two shooting victims who were killed in Barrio Logan over the weekend have been identified by authorities. A suspect has also been taken into custody.

According to the San Diego Police Department, gunshots rang out in the 1700 block of Newton Avenue around 9:40 p.m. Saturday night. Central Division officers responded to the area after a call came in reporting the violence. The officers located two men suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Homicide investigation underway in the East Village

The first victim, identified as a 28-year-old Osnaider Silveira, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, identified as 23-year-old Junior Alastre, was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. Police said both victims are believed to be recent immigrants from Venezuela.

Homicide detectives launched an investigation into the double shooting. Authorities discovered that the two victims, along with a third person, were in and around a parked vehicle when someone approached them and started shooting.

From there, the suspect, who was described as a man in his 30s with short hair and a full beard, entered a white 2012 Kia Forte that belonged to one of the victims. Once in the car, the man realized there was a woman in the backseat. Police said the suspect demanded that she get out of the car before fleeing the scene in the Kia.

The next day, the vehicle was located in the Los Angeles area. Police said it was occupied by a man matching the suspect’s description. The man, identified as 23-year-old Guillermo David Gonzalez of National City, was taken into custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department without incident.

Gonzalez has been booked into the San Diego County Jail on suspicion of two counts of murder, one count of carjacking and one count of robbery. He’s scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 18 at 1:30 p.m.

An investigation into the double shooting remains ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
