SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A special group of veterans are landing in Washington D.C. Friday as part of Honor Flight San Diego.

It’s the second flight this year that the nonprofit has organized.

It’s sure to be a powerful trip filled with a lot of emotion and gratitude — and much of that was evident right from the start.

Veterans began arriving to the San Diego International Airport just before 5 a.m. Many of them came on buses or were brought there by friends and family.

It was a heroes welcome as a group of San Diego firefighters greeted them and escorted them inside Terminal 2.

Honor Flight San Diego has been doing this for many years. It takes veterans from the WWII, Korea and Vietnam-era — as well as veterans from any era who have terminal illnesses — on a weekend trip to D.C.

This time around there were 92 veterans getting the opportunity to visit the Memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice.

These war heroes will return Sunday to a big welcome home party at the airport.
