Sheriff’s deputy injured in National City shooting; one suspect dead

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A San Diego County Sheriff’s Department deputy was injured in a shooting in National City Friday, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred just after 1:45 p.m. in the area near the 200 block of Mile of Cars Way, the sheriff’s office said.

The incident started as a deputy pulled over a white Acura for what investigators say was an infraction, but after a brief pause, things became desperate.

Two suspects, a man and a woman, from the Acura were taken into custody for narcotics-related charges, but deputies called for back-up to search for the last suspect.

Lt. Lou Maggi with the San Diego Police Department said another person ran into a car dealership and hid inside a tow truck. Witnesses said they heard gunfire.

The suspect hiding inside the truck was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot, authorities confirmed.

“There was a gun found near by him, it looks like that gun was jammed. We are going to be processing that gun, I can’t tell if it’s a real firearm or a replicate, I haven’t been there to see it yet,” said Maggi.

Maggi said a deputy who was working undercover at the time of the shooting sustained minor injuries due to glass from a window that exploded during the shooting.

The deputy, whose identity has not been disclosed, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The National City Police Department advised residents to avoid the Mile of Cars area, from National City Boulevard to Hoover Avenue. Roads were closed for several hours as police investigated the shooting.
