SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — It’s a familiar deafening sound that makes you plug your ears. The iconic Blue Angels went into the skies Friday for the first day of the Miramar Air Show.

“They are amazing at going up and doing these crazy stunts,” said Josh Dill.

Dill said he loves all of the aircraft but was particularly excited to see the Blue Angels.

The Blue Angels aerobatic stunt crew will be performing during all three days of what has been billed as America’s largest air show. The team consists of 138 active-duty Navy Sailors and Marines, according to the Blue Angels’ website.

It is currently the 78th year for the Blue Angels, which performs all around the nation showcasing the power of the F/A-18 Super Hornet along with the Marine Corps’ C-130J Super Hercules.

“I’ve always thought about joining the military,” said Capt. Brendan Fish, a C-130 pilot. “My family has been in the military but once you are in the military, it takes shape to a new meaning.”

It’s not just about the aerial acrobatics or the aircraft on display, the air show is also about showing pride for members of the nation’s military.

The air show concludes Sunday at MCAS Miramar.
