SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Over the last few months, attention on encampments along the San Diego River has grown as elected officials continue to grapple with the county’s homelessness crisis.

Experts say a critical first step to addressing these camp sites is to understand exactly how many people are living in them.

Throughout the weekend, close to a hundred volunteers with the San Diego River Park Foundation will set out to answer that very question, as well as what can be done to connect these often hard to reach people with services to help get them back on their feet.
