OCEANSIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Fire crews responded to a house fire Friday in the 4000 block of Olive Drive that displaced five adults and three dogs, according to the Oceanside Fire Department.

Oceanside and Vista fire crews responded to the fire after receiving a call around 5:22 p.m. from a resident who noticed smoke coming out of the home’s garage, according to a release by OFD.

According to authorities, the fire initially started in the garage and spread through an open door into the hallway, bedroom and attic.

Firefighters had to cut an opening in the house’s roof using chainsaws to create ventilation and prevent the flames from spreading further, OFD stated.

A primary search confirmed all residents of the home, including five adults and three dogs, had evacuated safely, the release said. However, firefighters learned a household cat was still missing.

Fire crews were able to find the cat inside the house and it was treated by medics before being taken to a veterinarian, according to authorities.

OFD said an investigation into what caused the fire is ongoing.
