SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego County officials have been looking to return over $850,000 in unclaimed money to its original source.

For those who have been expecting a check from the county, but haven’t received it, the deadline to submit a claim is fast approaching.

The cash comes from both property tax refunds and disbursements by county departments that never made it to its intended recipient.

According to the San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office, this could have happened for a number of reasons, like if the address or phone number of the person owed changed without a forwarding address.

However, the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office only has a limited amount of time it can hold onto unclaimed sums before the cash becomes county property and goes into its general fund. That deadline is Friday, Oct. 4.

Those who think they might be owned money from the county from property tax refunds or another reimbursement can check lists available on the Treasurer-Tax Collector office website . Both lists are searchable by name.

The cash amounts looking to be reunited with its intended recipient range from just a couple bucks to thousands of dollars. The average is about $221, the county says.

From there, people who find unclaimed money they believe belongs to them can submit a claim downloading the associated form.

An important note: claims for sums over $500 must be notarized before it can be submitted.
