    What are California’s newest state symbols?

    SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed three bills Friday designating the Dungeness crab, banana slug and black abalone as the Golden State’s newest symbols.

    AB 1797, authored by assemblymember Jim Wood, established the Dungeness crab as California’s official state crustacean. According to UC San Diego , Dungeness crab are usually found from Alaska’s Aleutian Islands all the way to Point Conception near Santa Barbara, although they are occasionally found as far south as Magdalena Bay in Baja California Sur, Mexico.

    Assemblymember Gail Pellerin introduced AB 1850 which recognizes the banana slug as California’s official state slug. The banana slug happens to be the school mascot of UC Santa Cruz, named Sammy the Slug .

    Meanwhile, AB2504 by assemblymember Diane Dixon established the shell of the black abalone as the official state seashell. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration , their usage in California dates back 7,400 years. They bore significance in California’s commercial and recreational fishing scene until fishing for black abalone closed in 1993 due to population declines, the NOAA said.

    Proposals for new state symbols may be submitted to California representatives , according to the California state library. Find all of California’s state symbols here .

    The Dungeness crab, banana slug and black abalone joined other icons such as the California grizzly bear, which is the official state animal; Augustynolophus morrisi, the official state dinosaur , and the golden trout, the official state fish.
