SAN MARCOS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A North County senior center was placed under a temporary evacuation order after it received a report of a possible explosive device on the property, authorities said Monday.

The incident happened at the Gary and Mary West PACE Senior Center in San Marcos around 12:03 p.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies said a person at the senior center called the sheriff’s department after they received a call warning that there might be an explosive device on the property.

Deputies responded and put the senior center under a temporary evacuation order so they could search the property, SDSO said.

According to Mary Jurgensen, the community engagement director at the West PACE center, approximately 70 participants and 40 staff were evacuated safely to the church next door.

The incident was cleared around 1:33 p.m. and the evacuation order was lifted after deputies deemed the threat was a false claim. No injuries were reported, according to SDSO.
