San Diego animal center donates $50K to hurricane recovery efforts

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Helen Woodward Animal Center is donating $50,000 to help with efforts being made by animal welfare organizations in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Rescue Ranch, located in Statesville, N.C., has become a hub for rescue groups working to assist thousands of animals in critical danger. The local animal center said the money will go to this organization, along with others helping to save the animals affected by the recent natural disaster.

“The devastation is unlike anything we’ve ever experienced before,” said Rescue Ranch Executive Director Michelle Hepler. “The loss of human lives and homes means that there are abandoned animals everywhere. Hundreds of them. There is so much work to be done, but we have been joined by such incredible groups and working together, we’re trying to make some headway.”

The donation by Helen Woodward Animal Center is meant to provide additional supplies, medical care, food or transport costs. Additionally, the local animal center said it’s “standing by” to send staff to assist on the ground should the need for more volunteers increase.

“It is truly amazing how everyone has come together to support our community,” said Rescue Ranch founder Newman. “The devastation from Hurricane Helene is heartbreaking, and it will take a very long time for these communities to rebuild. Rescue Ranch is committed to continuing our support and increasing our capacity to be a resource to those in need.”
