SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — California just became the fifth state to require phone restrictions on all school campuses, promoting student mental health and focus in the classroom.

Governor Gavin Newsom last month signed legislation — AB 3216 — limiting the use of smartphones during school hours. Some of the supporting factors included maintaining student safety, supporting mental health and minimizing distractions.

Local leaders are now reacting, specifically District 80 Assemblymember David Alvarez. He was actually a lawmaker who helped author the legislation, believing that the “phone free school policy” should be in place at every educational institution.

Some school districts have already started this, and all will be required to implement the new policy come next school year.
