Construction of new fire station begins in El Cajon

EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Miguel Fire and Rescue celebrated the groundbreaking of a new fire station in El Cajon Friday morning.

The construction of Fire Station 18 is underway at 1811 Suncrest Blvd., set to become one of eight fire stations within the San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District.

According to a release from SMFR, the original structure was due for an update after having served the unincorporated community of Crest in El Cajon since 1948.

The previous structure was demolished in August and is now being replaced by a new two-story station set to have a state-of-the-art alerting system. Construction crews broke ground on the project Friday, which is expected to be completed by December 2025.

Fire Station 18 is currently operating in a temporary facility until the new structure is completely built, according to SMFR.

The San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District is one of the largest fire districts in San Diego County. It serves nearly 140,000 people in the communities of Bostonia, Casa de Oro, Crest, Grossmont/Mt. Helix, La Presa, Rancho San Diego, Spring Valley and the unincorporated areas of El Cajon and La Mesa.
