SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — On Friday, the San Diego Police Department released the names of the two men involved in a stabbing and shooting on Fiesta Island last Wednesday.

Officers responded to a call of a stabbing at Fiesta Island last Wednesday around 10:03 a.m. and found two men just along the islet’s shore. One of the men had been stabbed and one of them had been shot, police said.

The man who had been stabbed was an off-duty officer who has worked for the San Diego Community College District Police Department for 25 years. He was identified Friday as Victor Bocaya.

Meanwhile, the man who had been shot was identified as 41-year-old Brian Maloney III. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

According to SDPD, Bocaya arrived at Fiesta Island to walk his dogs. Maloney was near his van parked about 75 feet away from Bocaya’s vehicle. Before Bocaya could get his dogs out of his vehicle, Maloney began yelling at him and approached him, police said.

The incident happened on the sand between the water and the road on Fiesta Island, according to police.

When Bocaya displayed his badge, identified himself as a police officer and took out his cell phone to call police, Maloney reportedly began stabbing him with a knife. Police said this is when Bocaya pulled out his personal firearm and shot Maloney one time.

Although he was off-duty at the time, SDPD said this is being investigated as an officer-involved shooting due to the fact that Bocaya had identified himself as a police officer and shown his badge.

After the Homicide Unit completes its investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether Bocaya bears any criminal liability for his actions, SDPD stated.
