SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Mayor Todd Gloria and Councilmember Marni von Wilpert joined the community on Saturday to celebrate the grand reopening of the Carmel Mountain Community Pool, which has undergone extensive renovations and upgrades. This marks the city’s 15th permanent pool, now managed by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Originally built in 1996, the pool has a history of various leaseholders managing its operations. However, since December 2022, the city has taken charge, leading to a comprehensive 20-month renovation to modernize the facility and ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

“We’re investing in new and improved recreational resources like this across our city to ensure all San Diegans have access to quality play and exercise opportunities,” Mayor Gloria stated. He expressed excitement over the collaborative effort that brought the facility back to life.

Upgrades to the pool include a new water heater, enhanced pool filters and pumps, roof repairs, as well as essential lead and mold abatement. The facility now features ADA-compliant restrooms, new lighting, deck equipment, chairs, and picnic tables, as well as a temporary office space.

Councilmember von Wilpert highlighted the importance of the pool as a community hub, emphasizing its role in promoting wellness and bringing families together. “This renovation represents our commitment to investing in community resources that improve quality of life for all San Diegans,” she said.

The revamped pool offers a variety of aquatics programs, including lap swimming, water fitness, a youth swim team, junior water polo, and recreational swim. The full schedule of activities, along with admission fees, can be found on the city pools webpage .

Nicole McNeil, Assistant Deputy Director for the Parks and Recreation Department, noted that the facility will not only provide recreational opportunities but also job openings within the community. “Come join us!” she encouraged, referencing ongoing hiring for positions such as pool guards and managers.

The celebration included an opening ceremony with safety demonstrations, resource booths, fun activities, and guided tours of the newly renovated facility.
