SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Although San Diego’s “sweater weather” may not be cold enough to make people break out their heavy coats and wool sweaters, it doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the vibrant display of fall foliage in some parts of the county.

Just a couple hours away, the scenery changes from towering palm trees and thrashing waves to serene mountains and oak trees. Here are a few places around San Diego County where you can experience what autumn has to offer aside from visiting a local pumpkin patch.

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park is also a good option a little more south of Julian. It has over 100 miles of trails plus two campsites — Paso Picacho and Green Valley — which can accommodate the entire family during a weekend of camping in the woodland forest.

While you’re in the area, make sure to stop and enjoy a slice of famous apple pie at one of Julian’s pie shops!

    Mount Laguna

Located just an hour east of San Diego, Mt. Laguna in the Cleveland National Forest is a popular spot for hikers and stargazers. Check out the Sunset Trail for a moderately challenging hike while admiring the fall colors of the alpine meadows. The Sunset Trail can be found at 10678 Sunrise Hwy., Descanso, CA 91948.

Mt. Laguna is also a popular place to catch astronomical and geomagnetic activity. Check out these photos taken by FOX 5/KUSI viewers of the northern lights on Oct. 10, 2024 .

From pine, fir and cedar trees to lowland meadows spread out over 1,800 acres, Palomar Mountain State Park offers stunning backdrops of red and gold during the autumn season. Palomar Mountain is also a good spot to watch astronomical events, such as the rare comet pictured above .

October’s temperatures have started off mild so far, so it’s a good time to put on your hiking boots and head out to these areas before the fall colors disappear!
